Hutchison's Clinical Medicine is a brilliant book; presenting info. in a flow and pattern continous but not if U r lookin' for defintns and explanation syndrome and disease wise. . .

1. PJ Mehta is 'not updated'. The old wine in a new bottle.
2. Allagapan is purely a 'text book', not a clinical one. If you want to read textbook, go for Mathews or Davidson
3. Hutchison 'was' a good book. Now a bit voluminous. Many of the clinical methods dropped in new edition. We Indians will thrive on 'clinical medicine' for next 200 years, and Hutch is not suitable for that purpose.
4. Macleod is handy and 'good' but missing the Indian essence.
5. Like the major chunk of Asian students, We were totally infatuated with Kundu. Indianised and globalised too. Kundu's book is a holy gift to Indian Medical students. All Clinical methods with illustrations are available there with questions and answers which are carried by the examiners in their pocket. It is wonderful for all category of students whether average or a brilliant one. It teaches you the basic madicine.
Other books available in Indian market are either old one or copied from other books.

Kundu's is an excellent book no doubt. But it has been largely copied from S.Sen. Dunno if u guys have heard of his book..

Hutchison is a must have I think because some of the examiners just love it the old-fashioned way!

hutchinson is a very nice book to read.

look n clear ur doubts abt wheeze/rhonchi/rales etc - Hutchinson n Harrison contradict in dis case. i dnt rmbr the details but jst check it out.

Kundu General examn is good.
i had prepared notes of General examination-clubbing pallor etc etc as its very imp.
nw also in my PG case presenations ppl ask us the basics.

Golwala had given diff methods to mpalpate liver spleen kidney,JVP.

Allagapan- i read CNS n examination theory frm Allagapan.

i didnt have patience to read Harrison(somehow i never liked that book) so i read George Matthews n Davidson.

reading Davidson 4-5times b4 exams is more than enuf to get good marks in final yr.

PJ Mehta has Hell lot of mistakes. do not quote its D/Ds in exam.
the causes of murmur etc etc is also given grossly wrong.

I don't agree with Dr. sudipto at all. Kundu's is not copied but Kundu is being copied.

Hutchison is really a fantastic book but never appear in final by reading 'only' that book.

finally I must say that one should choose clinical medicine book which is:
1. Science-bound
2. Students friendly
3. With sufficient explanations, and
4. Examination-oriented

Ahem..just for ur info, Dr. Kundu is currently in my college must say he's an excellent teacher to have at the bed-side! We love him here and that book by S.Sen was written way back before Dr. Kundu's.. in fact that book I talked about is currently into its 9th edition..only difference is that it deals with medicine system-wise and not case-wise..

About Hutchison..well, along with McLeod's.. its a must-read..standard texts need to be followed..even Dr. Kundu says that..he's a fan of Harrison's text himself..coz some examiners are pretty old-fashioned as I said and bookish too..I know for instance at least 3 ways of percussion courtesy our Chest Medicine Dept. but then we HAVE to show ONE in our examination and we all know which one

I personally went through P.J.Mehta myself..didn't find it all that nice or useful for that matter..

But to quote Dr. Kundu(am a fan of him) at R.G.Kar Medical College, Kolkata, patients are the live pages of ur textbook..head to toe examination is a must..its by seeing them again and again that one can learn the true art of clinical medicine..to know Kundu by heart, the best way is seeing more patients..coz its thus that u manage to retain what u learn rather than learning by rote

Dr. Sudipto u r absolutely correct. The best way to learn medicine is to see more patients. I convey my regards to Dr. Kundu. You are lucky as u r in touch with that phenomenal teacher.

I've heard from my friends that Dr. Arup Kumar Kundu recently delivered a lecture of 'Clinical Medicine' in MKCG Medical College, Berhampur, and it was attended by the whole Institutions with many of the Faculties. It was a heart-touching lecture delivered at 8 pm, few months' back.

Another thing to remember that your ward notes on clinical classes are as important as a good book. Carefully preserve them. I think that real essence of medicine lies in clinical medicine.

Just saw a new edition of Macleod's is out - the 12th one! I had read the 11th one myself, some time in my 2nd yr in College...and little bit in the 3rd..

Anyone following Macleod's?

How's it different? The new edition? Any changes? Additions?

Hutchinson rocks......

P.J. Mehta has been written only with the aim of impressing students...i wonder...why a medical student in major...would recall a list in a book for common questions e.g. "causes of fever"...dont u people think u can tell this out with your medical gk and common sense...P.J. Mehta has wasted many pages in enlisting different things...rather than giving core knowledge of the topic...its like mugging (ratana)....

chamberlain's is best for getting concepts.

hutchison is good but better to read from an older edition. coz clinical is given better in older editions whereas textbooks should be read from the latest editions.

Had the same query.
Here's what I follow:
Read Kundu when you are reading the text. for eg: when you are reading mitral stenosis from your text read the case from Kundu at the same time. That'll help you in final exams.
But Kundu covers the topics which are important for exam point of view. so if you want to have more clinical knowledge then just read symptomatology, ddx, systemic examination of these 4 systems: cvs cns git resp.
For cns hutchison is best. For systemic exam of the rest Mcleod or algappan any 1 that suits your time. For symptomatology and ddx: harrison is ideal if you are already reading it, but if not then go for algappan.

P.S. There's no point thinking about reading clinical part exclusively if you haven't read theory. Don't waste your time on so many clinical books, focus on theory first. If you know about the diseases and their presentation and a few basic clinical methods then you don't need to worry. you can't pass finals with clinicals only.

use it for defn,proforma of examination,etc.in case of any dilemma.huchison considered as the ref

do read kundu .all chap are good worth reading once but few topics exceptionally good .anemia,jaundice,clubbing.in short cases .for long case read acitis ,hepatosplenomegaly,cns -hemiplegia paraplegia,respi cases.the whole book is writen in a very good n understandable form.

if still want to do some more look for diagrams in algappn .there are many n help u to relate .

last but not the least there are many video lec on youtube .explaining way of examination.just type respi system examn etc

one such way to examn cd is free with mccleod

Basically Kundu as a baseline(so that u dont miss out on the points in history and the list of d/ds)....supplement kundu with hutchison for cns examination and McLeod for respi

Hutchison is the best, no doubt. But not always suitable for Indian soil. Moreover, it seems a bit tough for MBBS students.
If one goes thro' the index of Alagappan's book, it seems purely a theory book though entitles 'Practical medicine' only to stupify students. This book can never be a clinical book.
PJ Mehta is good but not sufficient, and the author is no more in this world, so editing is not upto the mark.
To me, like others, Kundu has no alternative, so far clinical science is concerned.

Kundu is the best.
Alagappan is totally a theory book. One can read it for theoretical knowledge.
Kundu's Bedside clinics is uncomparable clinical medicine book. The new editions are hot cakes.
But the best way is to see patients at hospital wards.
